George HW Bush Letter To Bill Clinton Shows What A Gentleman He Is

A letter, the outgoing President Bush left for incoming President Bill Clinton reveals GHWB’s reverence for the importance of the office and tradition of the peaceful transfer of power. Hillary Clinton put on Instagram a photo of the letter. Here it is (click for full size):

The text of the letter reads:

Dear Bill,

When I walked into this office just now, I felt the same sense of wonder and respect that I felt four years ago. I know you will feel that too.

I wish you great happiness here. I never felt the loneliness some President’s have described.

There will be very tough times, made even more difficult by criticism you may not think is fair. I’m not a very good one to give advice; but just don’t let the critics discourage you or push you off course.

You will be our President when you read this. I wish you well. I wish your family well.

Your success now is our country’s success. I am rooting hard for you.

What a great letter. President Bush didn’t have to do that. He could have just left office and not said a word to the guy who bashed him for months on end. Instead, he left words of encouragement for his adversary, and that just shows class.

    I recall that almost the day Clinton took office they announced (he and Hillary) that political correctness would be the way forward and anything else would not be tolerated. How well we see they have accomplished that.

    The Bushes were and are not totally conservative and both father and son made mistakes as President, but they have always conducted themselves with dignity and class. Even if you didn’t like them. it would be hard to deny their love for this country, even to the point of embracing their enemies and those with whom they disagree.
