The former vice president takes Michigan, Missouri and Mississippi. North Dakota, Idaho and Washington state are outstanding.

Joe Biden dominated Bernie Sanders with three victories in a row Tuesday, including the night’s biggest prize of all: Michigan.

As soon as polls closed at 8 p.m. Eastern, Biden was declared the winner in Missouri and Mississippi — a show of force reflecting how he bested Bernie Sanders with a broad coalition of black, white, suburban and rural voters. Three more states — Washington, Idaho and North Dakota — are left to be decided tonight.

With 125 delegates up for grabs, Michigan was important for Sanders substantively and symbolically. It was the state where he scored an upset over Hillary Clinton in 2016, making the primary more competitive than insiders had thought. Michigan then went for Donald Trump by less than a quarter point.

But Biden won across the state, making a statement about his electability as well as Sanders’ shortcomings as a general election standard-bearer.

“I don’t think the revolution is done, but I think Bernie Sanders’ chances of being president are done,” said Kevin Cate, advisor to former presidential candidate Tom Steyer.

“Biden is winning almost everywhere,” Cate added, “and cable news has decided he’s the nominee. And there’s no stopping that train once it starts going.”

In play in Tuesday’s primaries are 352 delegates of the total 3,979. After Tuesday, 47 percent of delegates will have been awarded. Biden leads Sanders 664-573.
