Mark Sanford will challenge President Trump for the 2020 Republican presidential nomination.
Sanford, a former two-term governor of South Carolina, announced on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace that he will join ex-Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld and former Illinois Rep. Joe Walsh in launching a long-shot campaign for the White House. No sitting president has lost his party’s nomination since former President Chester A. Arthur in 1884.
The 59-year-old, who served South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District covering the coastal region around Charleston from 1995 to 2001 and then again 2013 to 2019, had been openly mulling the prospect of a primary challenge pegged on the need for the GOP to reclaim its image as the party of fiscal conservatism.
